Know our team

Nutrition International’s Program Operations Unit is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of Nutrition International’s core program interventions including program development, design, planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting, and grant management, including setting annual operational planning, budgeting and review processes. The unit comprises a global team of professionals located in our 10 core countries across Asia, Africa and our headquarters in Ottawa, Canada.

The purpose of the Regional gender Equity Advisor is to act as a principal resource on gender equality issues for NI’s programs and projects in the Africa region by supporting gender analyses and action planning, training and capacity building for project staff and local partners, identifying and assisting in monitoring gender equality outcomes and indicators. Part of the role also includes exploring and supporting regional or country-level partnerships with gender and/or child-focused and women’s rights organizations in pursuit of achieving NI’s gender equality programming and strategic goals as well as supporting fundraising and business development activities in this area.

About you

You will have a postgraduate degree in gender/women’s studies with a focus on health, or in nutrition, public health, or international development with experience in gender and development. At least 6-8 years’ experience working with NGOs, UN agencies and/or other service providers in implementing gender-sensitive and/or responsive programming with public health, food security, and/or nutrition related programs within the Africa region. Experience with qualitative research methods, results-based management and using participatory methodologies in training and capacity building. Specific experience working in and/or knowledge of maternal nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, adolescent nutrition and health, and/or infant and child survival programming is an advantage. Familiarity with Global Affairs Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy. Good written and spoken English and knowledge of one other regional language (French, Swahili, Amharic) is an asset.

About the role

In this role you will be:

  • Supporting country teams to develop gender action plans which incorporate findings from sex and gender-based analysis (SGBA) into their project designs and formative research.
  • Strengthening the capacity of staff through inductions and specific training sessions and where possible, support efforts to build capacity of local partners, to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Working closely with MEAL team to monitor and report on gender equality outcomes and indicators and fill gender data gaps. Supporting the development of gendered indicators and tools and processes to collect data.
  • Ensuring quality assurance of project planning and reporting documentation as required with a specific focus on providing technical guidance in gender analysis throughout the project cycle, from design to evaluation.
  • Analyzing reports from identified projects and synthesizing summary reports for donors, NI publications and/or other stakeholders to highlight NI’s contribution to gender equality outcomes with nutrition programming.
  • Participating in regional/country level dialogue on gender equality.
  • Supporting country teams to monitor and performance manage sub-contractors and grantees; specification of work to be sub-contracted, and the identification, selection and engagement of appropriate individuals or institutions to carry it out under NI management.
  • Acting as Child Safeguarding focal point for project countries where there is no established NI office.
