Powered by People (PBP) is seeking a dynamic Managing Director Market Digitization who enjoys a fast-paced and challenging work environment, who has strong project management skills and demonstrates qualities of leadership, versatility, and integrity. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Kenya (and the East African region) with a dynamic forward market project spanning tech, capacity building, digital adoption, and access to finance.

You will oversee the largest single country digitization effort for the vast Creative Manufacturing and Handmade and dried foods sectors. Transform the lives of 100,000 makers and producers, their families and communities help add another engine to Kenya’s growth story and connect a sizable echo system of entrepreneurs with demand products to markets they would not otherwise reach. Support a major Kenyan sector level up to reach its full potential. You will work directly with the PBP global management team as well as donors and investors such as Unilever and other large well known philanthropic actors.


WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Project Management

  • Part of building, creating and initiating the project concept with the PBP team from the early stage
  • Ensure all projects are delivered on time within the stipulated scope and budget.
  • Manage day-to-day support project teams, grant consortium/project partners, sourcing/ implementation teams and donors, including communicating and assisting with project requests and overseeing adherence to project requirements, government regulations, and PBP goals and policies.
  • Oversee financial aspects of the project’s contract or agreement by reviewing monthly invoices for accuracy and compliance; responsible for tracking expenditures against budget and total obligated funds, coordinating development and monitoring of annual corporate budget, and regular forecasting of expenditures for Powered By People and donor.
  • Proactively identify issues or potential risks, including: project performance, financial, and legal, and other core business areas. Develop strategies and solutions to address risks, communicating, when appropriate, with the director and/or vice president.
  • Strategically assess and consult with supporting units on corporate-office and project-office matters to help make informed decisions.
  • Manage relationships between clients, and be responsible for all reporting to consortium leader and donor.
  • Lead efforts in reviewing and determining causes of variances in expenditures against forecasts and budgets, and ensure the donor and consortium leader is informed as appropriate.
  • Work with PBP management team to identify solutions for shortfalls, and train other PBP staff to do the same.
  • Take initiative to identify business opportunities, efficiencies, and cost savings for the project. Always being aware of partnership opportunities with synergistic organizations and businesses.
  • Identify opportunities for knowledge and solution-sharing across PBP and project partners, and take initiative to build staff and company capacity.
  • Oversee and lead negotiations with project partners and reviews deliverables in coordination with the project team to ensure they meet technical, contractual and quality standards.
  • Lead recruits of long- and short-term project personnel policy. Delegate to or mentor others in project recruiting where possible and appropriate.
  • Conduct periodic project office visits to monitor and support project operations and implementation, including conducting training, conducting or responding to audits, providing input to work planning, conducting technical research, and performing other complex tasks.
  • Review and provide comments on project technical work and deliverables and project communications documents.

Technical

  • Proactively engage with the technical team, sharing information and best practices learned with the company. This includes a strategic view to connect the practice and project in support of enhanced project performance and technical leadership.
  • Build expertise and contribute to PBP’s technical practice, business line, corporate priorities, and donor impact outcome expectations

Management and Leadership

  • Supervise, mentor, train, develop, and evaluate assigned staff. Provide regular performance feedback to supervisees and the time and opportunity to grow professionally.
  • Manage staff on a day-to-day basis and support them with necessary resources for their success.
  • Mentor and advise staff across the project, as appropriate, on a range of topics, including business development, technical work, and project management.
  • Demonstrate inclusive behaviors and leadership consistent with PBP’s values and leadership competencies.
